How to Customize a Resume

Customizing a resume is an excellent idea. Follow this blueprint so you can have several different versions of your work history.

Do you need a custom resume? If you have two to three major skill sets, consider a customized resume for each skill set, like these examples. Each skill could be the focus of one resume: sales and marketing or operations and project management or recruiter and branch manager. Focusing your resume on one major skill will make your resume more focused. Rather than sales and marketing competing for attention, focus on one. If the job requires, both skills, one resume is perfect.

Follow these steps each time to make a customized resume.

You are now ready to customize your existing resume.

Reword your summary or objective stating that “you are known for” what the employer wants to accomplish – (get this from the job summary). For example, I am an experienced marketing specialist known for growing market awareness and generating new business leads through improved website SEO and content marketing strategies.

Rewrite your career history to focus on the experiences that prove you have accomplished the top 2-3 job description duties.  These experiences must be at the start of each job history you list. It’s OK if you list a few related or similar topics if you mention what is important to them many times throughout your resume.

Once you have several customized resumes, one for each skill set, you can tweak your summary sightly and add other experiences to match the jobs that you are applying for. In other words, use your sales resume when applying for sales jobs, and if you want to tweak it slightly, you wont have much work to do.

Looking for a job?

How to write a cover letter

Now that you know how to create a customized resume, you will apply the same theory to your cover letter.  Copy your customized summary or objective from your resume.  Start your letter with something like I am seriously interested in the (job title) position I saw advertised on (social media platform). Paste your summary here.

Copy one or two of your customized experiences and start by saying. Here is an example of my recent work – and paste your experiences.

Finish by telling them why you are passionate and interested in the role, or their company or industry.

Here is a short YouTube video I made about this.

How to prepare for a job interview

Study the job description, research the company and industry and refresh yourself on all of your past experiences.

The easiest step place to start is refreshing your memory about your past work experiences. Remember the situation and all the details. Its not enough to mention what you accomplished. Remember the problem and the challenge it presented. What steps did you take leading up to the action? By explaining the whole situation, problem and resolution, the hiring manager can see that you have had the experience they are looking for.

Its sounds obvious but studying the job description is a great way to prepare for the interview. Rehearse your experience and stories based on what they need.

Researching the company and industry is time consuming and can be daunting when you don’t where to start or what information to look for. Take in as much information as you can. You might be able to use it in the interview when it is time for you to ask questions.

How to follow up after the interview

  1. Get a business card after the interview

  2. Email a short thank you letter the next day in the morning

  3. Write a neat hand-written letter and mail it in 24 hours after your interview

  4. If you have not heard back from the company in 3 business days, call the hiring manager and follow up by letting them know you are interested by asking “If he/she has made a decision yet?” If no decision has been made, you can assume that he/she has not found what they are looking for.

  5. Ask them “what experiences or skills do you think I am lacking?”  Agree or disagree.

  6. If you are lacking a skill offer a reference and say that you can overcome that. Here is a reference who can prove that. Tell them why you think you can do a great job.

  7. Close by letting them know that if they don’t find the perfect candidate, give you a call. Tell them why you think you can do a great job.
